Meet Jan Echavarry – Founder & Head Dog Trainer

Jan Echavarry, owner and founder of A Better Dog Training, has been providing professional dog training in San Antonio, TX since 2007. With decades of hands-on experience, her passion for animals and commitment to helping dogs and their owners succeed is the foundation of everything we do. As Edward Hoagland once said:

“In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn’t merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog.” (Edward Hoagland)

Jan’s Story

A Better Dog Training Inc Aggressive Dog Training & Puppy Classes San Antonio, TX

Jan’s love for animals began early, growing up on a farm in Washington surrounded by dogs and horses. What she later realized was that those well-behaved animals weren’t just naturally obedient—they were trained with consistency and care.

Her professional journey began over 20 years ago while volunteering at a dog rescue in South Texas. There, she saw firsthand that many dogs were overlooked—not because they were bad dogs, but because they lacked basic training and social skills.

Determined to make a difference, Jan:

  • Completed a professional dog training program through PetSmart
  • Graduated from a nationally recognized, hands-on training school in California
  • Founded A Better Dog Training in 2007

Today, she offers in-home dog training, board and train programs, and dog boarding services throughout the San Antonio area.

Her mission remains the same:

To help every dog become a well-behaved companion and a source of pride for their owner.

Community Involvement & Education

Jan is actively involved in the local community, sharing her knowledge and passion for dog training through educational events and volunteer work.

Community Activities Include:

  • Career Day presentations at local schools
  • Dog training seminars at the Bulverde Spring Branch Library
  • Training consultations and demonstrations at local veterinary events

During these events, Jan often brings her trained yellow Labrador, Troy, to demonstrate obedience and teach safe, positive interactions with dogs—especially for children.

Our Training Philosophy: Balanced Reward-Based Training

At A Better Dog Training, we use a proven method called Balanced Reward-Based Training, which combines positive reinforcement with appropriate corrections to create reliable, long-term results.

What Is Balanced Dog Training?

Dog training methods generally fall on a spectrum:

  • Positive-only reinforcement
  • Correction-based training

Our approach combines the best of both.

How It Works:

  • Rewards (treats, praise, play) are used to teach new behaviors
  • Corrections are introduced once a behavior is understood but not followed
  • Training is customized to each dog’s personality, temperament, and environment

This balanced approach mirrors how dogs naturally communicate with one another—through clear feedback, boundaries, and consistency.

Why Balanced Training Is Effective

Dogs, like people, learn differently. What works for one dog may not work for another.

Our method:

  • Establishes clear boundaries and expectations
  • Reinforces desired behaviors with consistency
  • Helps dogs stay focused even with distractions
  • Builds trust—not fear—between dog and owner

Corrections are never about punishment. They are used to redirect behavior and reinforce previously learned commands.

Our Dog Training Goals

Our number one priority is helping each client achieve real, lasting results.

We accomplish this by:

  • Customizing every training program to your specific needs
  • Addressing both obedience and behavioral challenges
  • Teaching you how to lead and communicate effectively

Whether you need:

  • Puppy training
  • Basic obedience
  • Behavior modification (including aggression)

We create a plan that works for your dog, your home, and your lifestyle.

Building Leadership & Trust with Your Dog

Successful dog training starts with leadership. Dogs thrive when they understand structure, boundaries, and expectations.

To become an effective leader, you must:

  • Be consistent in your actions and commands
  • Set and maintain clear boundaries
  • Communicate with confidence and clarity

Leadership isn’t just used during training sessions—it’s part of your everyday relationship with your dog.
